UK Inflation Falls to 15-Month Low in June: A Breath of Fresh Air for Households
The UK's inflation rate has dropped to its lowest level in 15 months, falling to 2.6% in June. This is a significant relief for households, as it comes in the wake of lower petrol prices and a decrease in food and fuel costs. The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rate has come down from 2.8% in May, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and is now below the expected 2.7% rate.
This drop in inflation is a result of several factors. Firstly, average petrol prices declined by 2.1p per litre between May and June, while diesel prices dropped by 10.7p per litre. The ONS chief economist, Grant Fitzner, attributed this to a fall in motor fuel prices, particularly diesel, and a decrease in food prices, driven by products such as chocolate, margarine, and beef.
The start of summer sales also contributed to the drop in clothing prices, with bigger discounts than last year. Additionally, the cost of raw materials dipped for the first time since January, mainly due to the lower price of crude oil, while the increase in the costs of goods leaving factories slowed again.
The newly appointed Chancellor, John Healey, has welcomed the falling inflation rate, stating that it is news that families want to hear. However, he also acknowledges that there is much more to do to give people the breathing space they need. To address this, the government has cut VAT on electricity bills and announced a £2 cap on bus fares from January. These measures are designed to keep inflation down while helping people afford the essentials.

The price of oil has increased by 20% over the past month, and the energy price cap will apply from July. However, the stubbornly high core inflation rate and the sluggish economy are expected to keep policymakers on alert. The Bank of England is likely to adopt a wait-and-see stance, with an interest rate hike not fully priced in until close to the end of the year.
