Nestled in the tranquil countryside of southwest France, among fragrant lavender fields and majestic cypress trees, lies a captivating honey-hued bastide that could have stepped straight out of a romantic novel. This charming farmhouse, once home to roaming goats and donkeys, has undergone a remarkable transformation by Dalrymple Studio, a creative force that breathed new life into its rustic bones.
The project, spanning three years, was a labor of love and a delicate dance between preserving the past and embracing the present. Amy Dalrymple, the studio's creative director, explains, "It was an exciting challenge to reimagine a space that had already been beautifully converted but needed an update to accommodate the evolving needs of its owners."
Reviving the Bones
At the heart of the renovation was a commitment to preserving the bastide's authentic character. The raw terracotta tiles and exposed beams, remnants of its agricultural past, were cherished and highlighted. As Amy puts it, "The clients wanted to keep the essence of the house intact while modernizing the aspects that no longer served their lifestyle."
A Collaborative Vision
The owners' vision was clear from the outset. They sought a home that could seamlessly accommodate intimate gatherings and larger parties alike. To achieve this, the Dalrymple team collaborated closely with the clients, architect Robert Dallas, and furniture designer Matthew Cox. "It was a wonderful creative process," says Hewie Dalrymple, the studio's project manager. "The clients trusted us to lead, but they also pushed us to think outside the box."
The Heart of the Home
The sitting room, with its bespoke sofa designed by Dalrymple Studio and crafted by Bray, became the focal point. The room's transformation was a study in balance, blending comfort and functionality. "We wanted to create a space that felt lived-in and loved," Amy explains. "The curtains, made from 'Echo Wind' fabric, add a touch of elegance, while the Kangela Rug from Coral and Hive brings a sense of warmth and texture."
A Table for All Occasions
One of the project's standout features is the custom-designed table by Matthew Cox. With magnetic inserts, it can effortlessly accommodate varying guest numbers, ensuring every meal feels special. "No more lonely dinners at an oversized table," Hewie quips. The dining chairs, also designed by Dalrymple, are a testament to their attention to detail, offering comfort for extended lunches and dinners.
Outdoor Oasis
The renovation extended beyond the house, creating an outdoor haven. A new bar area with integrated DJ decks and an outdoor kitchen were added, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. "We wanted to create a versatile space," Hewie shares. "The mirror-TV behind the tap adds a unique touch, allowing the owners to adapt the space to their entertainment needs."
A Seamless Blend
The finished bastide is a testament to the studio's craftsmanship and the owners' vision. Every room tells a story, yet the overall flow is seamless and harmonious. "It's a truly unique project," Amy reflects. "The attention to detail and the way it was tailored to the owners' lives is remarkable. A year after completion, it was heartwarming to see it being used and loved exactly as intended."
